Leslie Peck enlisted in the U S Navy on Dec. 15 1941 (just one week after the Pearl Harbor attack). Leslie was stationed aboard the USS Wasp when she was sunk at the Battle of the Coral Sea on 15 Sept. 1942. He then was sent aboard the light cruiser USS Santa Fe. He fought at many battles including Tarawa, Okinawa and many more. He also saw many Kamikaze attacks. He was in the typhoon called “Halsey’s Typhoon” where three Navy destroyers the USS Monahan, Hull, and Spence were sunk with about 750 men going in the water and only 100 surviving the ordeal. Another sailor who was in the typhoon said that there were 140 mph winds and that destroyers rolled to a 70 degree list.
