Bob Liberty: Born 1924

Enlisted July 1943 on the U.S.S Tingey 539 as a Torpedoman. He was very near the U.S.S Franklin when she was hit by a kamikaze killing over 700 men. The Tingey picked up the survivors. The Tingey was also in the “Halsey Typhoon” which sank 3 destroyers, killing 750 and only 100 lived. Bob said there was 70 seas. The Tingey was involved in the battle of Leyte Gulf. Bob was working in Detroit during the 1943 race riots. Whites were throwing Blacks off the Bell Isle bridge. Bob was in Task Force 58, a small force that fought a large Japanese Naval force. Did you see the U.S.S Callahan? Yes, Tingey was at “Great Marianas Turkey shoot. The Tingey was the closest ship to the U.S.S Franklin when she was hit on March 18, 1945 at 0 kinawa with the losefover 700. Bob thinks the waves were 70’ in “Halsey’s Typhoons” on December 18, 1944. Bob thinks the three DD’s that were lost, listed so badly that water went down stacks and blew up the boilers. Bob thanked be several times for “what I am doing to keep WW2 history alive”.
