George Kass: USS San Francisco
George was transferred off “Francis” after Pearl Harbor. Ask George to talk about S.F. History in Guadalcanal sea battles, if he heard about them at reunions in the 50’s or 60’s. He went to the Ashtabula. During attack, George had no ammo so he went to USS New Orleans to fight. Japanese planes came within 50 yards from San Francisco on their way to the battleship now. George was about 200 yards from the Arizona. George went to the F.O. Ashtabula where he stayed with the fleet. She was torpedoed by a plane in Layte Gulf in 1944. She did not sink but because the torpedo hit the fuel oil tanks, there was not ?, a explosion as if the aviation fuel tanks had been hit
