Russ was in the 447th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force in Rattlesden England. He made 11 missions before being shot down over Munich Germany. Hear Russ tell about being double crossed by the French Underground (probably a German who had infiltrated the French Underground). He was at Buchenwald for two months before a Luftwaffe office found out they were American air crews and got them out of the concentration camp (Buchenwald). He was then sent to Stalag Luft 3. This is the prison camp where the 1963 movie named the Great Escape was set. The actual Great Escape took place in March of 1944 and Russ was there in the fall of 1944. He also tells of a forced march of many days in the freezing cold to get out of the was of the advancing Russian Army.
