Bob was a US Navy seaman stationed aboard the civilian ship  the SS Jean Nicolet in the Indian Ocean in July 1944  when a Japanese submarine fired a torpedo at them.  Hitting the Nicolet and partially sinking her.  The crew abandoned ship.  The submarine surfaced and took about 100 men on the sub.  The Japanese slaughtered about 73 of the men but left 23 alive when the sub’s radar found a plane in the area so the sub dove below and 23 men were left alive for several days in the ocean.
