Herb went into the South Dakota National Guard in 1938. He was in the Army at Pearl Harbor on the 7th of Dec. 1941. Herb was about five miles from the main attack at the Navy Base and saw only a few Japanese planes strafe his base. Herb was not allowed to go to the Navy base because the military allowed no unnecessary personnel by the ships. He was involved in fighting in the Solomon Islands as well as Luzon in the Philippines.
