Werner was stationed aboard the USS Dobbin a destroyer tender about 200 yards behind the USS Arizona on that “Day of Infamy” as President Roosevelt called it. Werner tells of the attack on his ship killing three of his fellow crewmen. Within one hour of the beginning of the attack Werner was in a whaleboat helping burned or dead sailors of the burning water. There was about eight inches of thick black oil on the water. He tells of watching all of the attacks on Battleship Row while he was passing ammunition to his anti-aircraft gun. He also tells about being in the Civilian Conservation Corps before the war.
